[John Harding photograph archive]

Creator/Contributor:

Harding, John, 1940 August 6-, creator

Abstract:

Series 1: chiefly large-format, exhibition quality photographs of street scenes in San Francisco, with an aesthetic emphasis on color. Images depict various aspects of the city's social and cultural diversity, focusing on everyday people in public spaces, and including such subjects as events, fashions, architecture, automobiles, neighborhoods, businesses, signs, graphic design and other features of the urban environment. Many photographs taken at street fairs and other gatherings, such as the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade and opening night at the San Francisco Symphony. Also includes similar scenes and portraits from other California locations, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Walnut Creek, Marin County, Alameda, Oakland, Pacifica, Madera, Antioch, Santa Cruz, Albany, Napa, Death Valley, Quincy, Moffett Field, Newport Beach, Watsonville, San Bruno, Half Moon Bay, Rio Vista, Berkeley and San Jose. Also present are some scenes taken outside of California in such locations as New York City, Colorado, Chicago, and Washington D.C. 2012 additions include selected negatives from the photographer's archive and accompanying digital reference prints and digital image files of these selections, and oversize exhibition prints. 2016 additions include a box of color digital prints of images reproduced in Harding's book Analog days (2011) and a copy of this book; and a unique book of 34 mounted prints of color street photography (ffALB vol. 1) with embossed title on front cover: John Harding. 2019 additions include a set of color digital prints (ffALB box 9) corresponding to images reproduced in the limited edition book Streets of discontent (2018). 2021 additions include digital prints of selected images taken in 1983 (AX box 1) and 1984 (AX box 2) accompanied by two self-published books -- titled 1983 and 1984 (both housed in A box 1) -- illustrated with images from these groups. 2022 additions include digital prints of selected images taken between 1984 and 2022 (housed in AX boxes 3-5), including documentation of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on public bahavior; and eight self-published books of images from these selections: 1985 (A box 1); 1986, the 1990s, Analog Days II, Waiting (A box 2); Livesm Muni and the People: San Francisco, Muni and People: San Francisco 2021 (A box 3); and Pandemic Days (A box 4).
Series 2: set of black and white portraits (ffALB box 8) depicting siblings, taken chiefly in the mid-1970s throughout the United States. The first 69 photographs, gelatin silver prints, feature images reproduced in the publication Siblings (1982); the remaining 33 photographs, digital prints, were reproduced in a later publication, also titled Siblings (2016).
Series 3: set of 29 black and white views (ffALB box 10) depicting San Francisco streets and neighborhoods, with an emphasis on relatively remote locations of the city and a noteworthy absence of people and action. Taken between 2001 and 2005, set corresponds to images (some identical, some different) in Harding's book San Francisco four x five.
